ESA Boss Talks Trends at D.I.C.E. Summit

ESA president Michael Gallagher spoke at his first D.I.C.E. Summit this week, and had a message for attendees.
As reported by Wired Game|Life, Gallagher proclaimed that gaming has gone mainstream:
Everyone’s a gamer… We’ve extended the gaming ecosystem. The stereotypes no longer apply… [But] we must never forget our base. Avid gamers have been with us from the start, and when we deliver for them, they deliver for us.
Gallagher also noted that Halo 3 rang up more sales on its launch day than did Spider-Man 3’s opening weekend or the last Harry Potter book on its opening day.
GP: To be fair, Halo 3 set buyers back sixty bucks per copy, while the Harry Potter book listed for half that amount. And movie tickets are $12-15. All of which means that unit sales could have been lower for Halo 3 than either the book or the movie while still generating more revenue.
Gallagher continued:
[The industry needs to] welcome new gamers. We need to make games easier, and more accessible… It’s also very important that we change what we say relative to parents. Parents are our partners in the growth of this industry.
[Active games are] another trend we need to embrace.
Gallagher also urged attendees to join the Video Game Voters Network:
Be helpful, have your voice heard.
