HD DVD Is Dying - We’re Sad
Posted on Jan 10, 2008 under Main |In case you aren’t filled in on the up to the minute news regarding the Blu Ray vs. HD DVD next-gen movie format wars, it isn’t looking too good for HD DVD. Warner Bros. jumped ship to Blu Ray which led the HD DVD group to cancel their CES 08 press conference. This announcement also resulted in Bill Gates playing Guitar Hero rather than talking about HD DVD at CES which was supposed to make up a good portion of the keynote. Things are definitely on the downward slope for HD DVD.
Is it surprising that Blu Ray is going to win? Not really. The PS3 was easily the deciding factor in this war, and whether you want to use it as a Blu Ray player or not, there is no question that movie studios look at the millions of Blu Ray players Trojan Horse’d into homes via the PS3 and can only see dollar signs. Sony had everything to lose if Blu Ray failed, and there was no way they would fall.
The “war” isn’t quite over just yet, as Universal and Paramount and a few small frys are still on the HD DVD side, but if you asked me right now I probably wouldn’t recommend an HD DVD player at full price. If you could get one for cheap, which is going to be increasingly likely as the year goes on, I’d say pick one up. It isn’t as if the players and discs suddenly stop working once one side of the battle “wins”, so if you can get a player for less than $100 and some cheap movies, do it. The Xbox 360 HD DVD drive is a pretty cheap entry point, and performs surprisingly well.
So long HD DVD. We hardly knew ye.
