We’ve heard very little news from this week’s Florida Bar disciplinary trial of anti-game activist Jack Thompson.
Here’s what we know:
As expected, the case, which began on Monday, continued all week long. We spoke to a staffer in the court of Judge Dava Tunis this morning who told us the Thompson trial was reconvening at 11AM today, Miami time.
Earlier this week Thompson filed a motion with the U.S. District Court to vacate the Bar case. Judge Adalberto Jordan rejected Thompson’s motion yesterday, thus allowing the case to continue.
Thompson himself has sent very little GP’s way this week. Although he e-mailed this cryptic message on Wednesday morning, we received no follow-up, despite a couple of requests:
Florida Bar Disbarment Trial of Anti-Violent Video Game Activist Heats Up… Things took quite a turn against the video game industry at Miami attorney Jack Thompson’s lawyer “disciplinary” trial yesterday [Tuesday]. Wonderful details will be disclosed publicly shortly.
I’m still awaiting those “wonderful details.” Although my gut tells me that if Thompson had something to brag about, he wouldn’t keep it to himself, it’s probably best not to indulge in too much speculation at this point.
Regarding the Tivo Alert, we’ve learned that Thompson will appear on Spike TV’s GameHead program tonight at 1AM Eastern Time. Show host Geoff Keighley was at VGXPO a few weeks back and apparently caught up to Thompson there.
Keighley will also have an interview with Spencer Halpin about his Moral Kombat movie.

Every gamer’s favorite academic, Prof. Henry Jenkins of MIT, blogs a two-part series detailing his impressions of the controversial documentary film Spencer Halpin’s Moral Kombat.Jenkins, who appears in the film, is enthusiastic:
Moral Kombat is perhaps the most important film ever made about video games.and you should see it if you get a chance. The film will force people on all sides of the debate about games and violence to re-examine their own positions and ask harder questions…
I will admit to having had a crisis of faith when I first saw the trailer. It felt sensationalistic and one-sided… don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t judge this film by its preview.
Frankly, I have been deeply troubled by those in the gaming community who would seek to silence this film, even if its perspective were fundamentally opposed to our own. Surely, we can’t defend the free speech rights of game designers and players by seeking to silence those who disagree with us… How does that make us any better than what we are fighting against?
I am proud to have been included in this important work. I hope my readers will be open-minded enough to check their assumptions at the door, give the film a chance, and think through the implications of what it has to say with fresh eyes.
Full Disclosure Dept: Spencer Halpin is the brother of ECA president Hal Halpin. The ECA is the parent company of GamePolitics.

Burnout Paradise is being developed with the PS3 as the lead platform. Nick Channon, brains behind the game, sat down recently and made a few comments about what this means for the 360. As we know, 360 developed games end up with sub-par ports to the PS3 due to the different architectures and whatnot, but what about PS3 developed titles? Channon believes developing games on the PS3 first will actually make an impressive move onto the 360 — making the game better on the 360 than if developed on the 360 alone. It’s less complicated than it sounds.
At least, that’s how we’d like to interpret his quote about leading development on PS3: “From our point of view, we’ve had no issues with dealing with either machine; that’s what I mean by that. It seems that some games haven’t always transitioned between the two well. From our perspective leading on Playstation3 has meant Xbox 360 has given us a great product.” What do you guys think? Is he saying the PS3 will make ports to 360 a lot more successful than vice-versa, or something else?

Codemasters® today announced Race Driver: GRID™ as the full and official title for the game introduced under the working title of Race Driver One. Race Driver: GRID is the new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT™ and the Race Driver™ series, and is set to deliver a step-change in the racing genre.
Coming mid 2008, Race Driver: GRID is set to capture every moment from the starting grid to the chequered flag and concentrate those moments into an intense and dramatic race experience. Race Driver: GRID is being developed for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Games for Windows®.
“Race Driver: GRID is all about the race.” said Gavin Raeburn, Executive Producer at Codemasters Studios. “The next iteration of our DiRT engine combined with a decade of experience in developing driving games enables us to put the player at the centre of the action like never before. Damage, packed grids, intelligent opposition and unprecedented race day atmosphere will combine to deliver an experience like no other.
Says Ralph Fulton, Chief Game Designer. “GRID focuses on everything that happens between the start grid and the chequered flag: the drama, the rivalries, the aggression and the crashes. This is not a game about collecting cars or spending all of your time in the front-end tuning suspension settings or designing liveries. We want to make racing exciting again.”
Race Driver: GRID will take players to beautifully realised and dramatic race locations over three continents to compete in an unprecedented variety of racing events. Packed with the most powerful race cars – new and classic, circuit and drift – players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races.
In Europe, race gamers will compete on the greatest official tracks in prestige Marques including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani.
Iconic cities across the U.S. – including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit and each with their own atmosphere and events – play hosts to diverse street races. Here, high-performance V8 muscle cars set the pace in aggressive closely fought pack competitions.
In the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, take drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads. There is also the opportunity to compete in races that operate on the fringes of legality in the back streets and industrial areas of Yokohama.
Race Driver: GRID is coming mid 2008 for the Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 system and Games for Windows. To register for future driver briefings and get a place on the grid, be sure to visit www.codemasters.co.uk/grid.

Blacksite: Area 51’s creative director Harvey Smith let loose about the title’s “f*cked up” development during the Montreal Inernational Game Summit. Reported by Wired, he says he wasn’t too interested in the project to begin with and the game was “disastrously off rails” a year before finishing. He also says the game went from alpha to final in a “completely reprehensible” fashion. The critics agree.
Smith says his openness about the problems is due to “personal accountability.” It’s pretty obvious that publisher Midway just wanted the game out and maybe get some daft holiday shopper purchases, rather than hold off and do the title justice with a Spring ‘08 release — like many publishers opted for this year. Remember Midway, don’t ruin your name (more) by just pushing cow pies out the door — go ask Atari how that ends.

We don’t know why there’s been such a fervent quest to dampen the clickety-clack noise of the Rock Band drum kit:, as we’ve already solved the problem. Here, try our free mod: First, turn the TV up. Second … there is no second! You’re done. And as a side benefit, you’re playing louder! Like a real rock star.
But, if neighbors or local noise ordinances make our plan impossible, forum members at the Quarter to Three Forums have been working to curtail the problem. The biggest success so far seems to be these circular mouse pads, trimmed and glued to become efficient, silent conduits of rock. Keith Moon would be … well, he’d be disgusted. But your wife will be happy.
[Thanks, Jeff]
